DEMOREST, Ga. — Piedmont University has earned the top spot in Georgia for students pursuing degrees in forensic science and technology, according to the latest rankings released by Niche.com.
The university was recently named the No. 1 Best College with Forensic Science & Technology Degrees in Georgia in Niche’s 2026 Best Colleges rankings. The rankings are based on an analysis of academic performance, admissions data, financial factors, student life, and millions of reviews submitted by current students and alumni.
University officials say the recognition reflects both the strength of Piedmont’s forensic science program and the success of its students.
“We are honored to see that Niche ranked Piedmont University as the 2026 Best College with Forensic Science and Technology Degrees in Georgia,” said John Lanneau, professor and chair of the Department of Forensic Science and Criminal Justice. “This achievement is a reflection of our students’ hard work and commitment to their future careers. Every day, we have the privilege of helping students develop their knowledge, skills, and abilities to build the confidence needed to succeed in forensic science career fields.”
Lanneau added that watching students grow, achieve their goals, and make a difference in their communities is among the most rewarding aspects of the program.
Piedmont’s forensic science program has experienced significant growth since its launch in 2015. According to the university, enrollment in the undergraduate program has more than tripled since fall 2020, making it the fastest-growing major at the institution.
The university’s Master of Science in Forensic Science program, which welcomed its first students in fall 2024, has also seen rapid expansion. Enrollment reportedly quadrupled from its first year to its second.
Students enrolled in the forensic science program complete coursework that extends beyond traditional laboratory sciences. In addition to studying forensic and natural sciences, students receive instruction in courtroom procedures, evidence documentation, crime scene photography, and other specialized skills needed in the field.
The program also emphasizes hands-on learning. Students complete semester-long internships with local and state law enforcement agencies and gain experience working on real-world crime investigations and forensic cases.
The recognition comes as Piedmont continues investing in the future of forensic science education. Earlier this year, the university received $608,000 in federal funding to strengthen its forensic science program and expand workforce development opportunities across Georgia. University officials credited U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff for helping secure the funding.
