One of Habersham County’s most remarkable residents received national recognition Saturday night when 104-year-old World War II veteran Ken Schubring Sr. was honored by President Donald Trump during the nation’s 250th birthday celebration in Washington, D.C.
Schubring, who now lives in Habersham County with his son, Ken Schubring Jr., was recognized during the president’s nationally televised address commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. During the speech, President Trump recounted Schubring’s extraordinary military service before inviting him to the stage, where he appeared alongside his son before thousands gathered in the nation’s capital and millions watching across the country.
For many viewers, it was an introduction to one of America’s living links to history.
Schubring was just 19 years old when he witnessed the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. Stationed with the U.S. Army Air Forces only a few miles from the harbor, he had just finished guard duty and was eating breakfast when enemy aircraft filled the skies over Hawaii, forever changing the course of American history.
His service did not end there.
Schubring later became a flight engineer aboard B-29 bombers flying combat missions over Japan from Saipan. In a remarkable distinction, he served during both the opening and closing chapters of America’s involvement in World War II, witnessing the attack on Pearl Harbor and later learning of Japan’s surrender while returning from one of his final bombing missions.
Over the course of his military career, Schubring earned numerous decorations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Pearl Harbor Commemorative Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
After the war, he continued a life of service, earning a master’s degree in business administration, working in education and public service, and remaining active in his community for decades.
Now 104 years old, Schubring calls Habersham County home, where he lives with his son, Ken Schubring Jr. Saturday night’s recognition placed the local veteran on a national stage as President Trump highlighted his story as part of the celebration honoring America’s 250 years of independence.
For Habersham County, it was a proud moment to see one of its own—an eyewitness to one of the most pivotal days in American history—recognized before the nation during one of the country’s most historic Independence Day celebrations.
