The Habersham County Board of Commissioners is inviting Purple Heart recipients from across the county to a special luncheon recognizing their service and sacrifice.
The Purple Heart Appreciation Day Luncheon will be held Friday, Aug. 7, at the Habersham EMC Headquarters, 6135 Highway 115 West in Clarkesville. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m., with the luncheon beginning at noon.

The event is open to all Habersham County Purple Heart recipients and their spouse or one guest.
Reservations are requested by Friday, July 31, to assist organizers with seating and catering. Veterans may RSVP by scanning the QR code on the event flyer, emailing pj@habershamga.com, or calling (706) 839-0215.
The luncheon is being sponsored by the Habersham County Board of Commissioners as a way to recognize local veterans who were wounded or killed while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.
A Symbol of Sacrifice
The Purple Heart is the nation’s oldest military decoration still awarded to service members. Its origins date back to 1782, when General George Washington established the Badge of Military Merit during the Revolutionary War to recognize acts of extraordinary service and valor.
The award fell into disuse after the Revolutionary War but was revived in 1932 on the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s birth. Renamed the Purple Heart, it became a decoration honoring members of the U.S. military who were wounded or killed in action against an enemy.
Unlike many military awards that recognize achievement or heroism, the Purple Heart is unique because it recognizes the personal sacrifice of those who have shed blood—or made the ultimate sacrifice—in service to the nation.
Today, the Purple Heart remains one of the most respected military decorations in the United States, serving as a lasting symbol of courage, resilience, and dedication to duty.
Habersham County’s annual appreciation luncheon provides an opportunity for the community to express its gratitude to the men and women whose sacrifices helped protect the freedoms Americans enjoy every day.
