Digitize Habersham has reached an exciting milestone: 250 subscribers have now created accounts to search and explore Habersham County’s historic newspaper archive.
Launched in November 2022, Digitize Habersham was created to preserve local history and make it easier for everyone to find it. What once required hours of page-by-page research in aging bound newspapers or difficult-to-use microfilm can now be searched online by keyword and date.
The archive has grown substantially since its launch, from 8,500 digitized pages to approximately 155,000 pages today. It includes newspapers published in Habersham County dating back to the 1850s, preserving stories of the people, places, businesses, schools, events, and everyday moments that shaped our community.

Behind each searchable page is a careful process. Historic newspapers are digitized from microfilm, then prepared with custom software that creates searchable files and organizes them in the online archive. This work helps protect fragile materials from further deterioration while making the information available to researchers, families, students, and anyone interested in Habersham’s past.
Subscribers have already used Digitize Habersham to discover family stories, research local landmarks, locate articles about loved ones, and answer questions that once might have taken days or weeks to investigate. Each new account represents another person with the ability to connect with the county’s history.
Reaching 250 subscribers is a meaningful reminder that local history matters—and that preserving it is not simply about the past. It is about giving future generations a way to understand where they came from.
