The Habersham Central Raiders fell 49-17 to Monroe Area on Friday night in a game overshadowed by a frightening fourth-quarter collision that sent senior linebacker Ryder Cook to the hospital.
Cook, No. 23, collided with teammate C.J. Cordero during a defensive play. Cook remained on the field as coaches, players and medical personnel gathered around him.
There was no ambulance stationed at the game when the injury occurred, creating an extended delay while the teams waited for one to arrive. Ambulances are commonly present at high school football games so injured players can receive immediate transportation when necessary.
As the wait continued, players and coaches from both teams gathered near the 50-yard line and prayed for Cook. The concern extended throughout the stadium, where the atmosphere became almost completely silent.
“I have never heard a stadium so quiet,” said Amanda Lee, a photographer for the Habersham Central Band of Blue.
The mother of Monroe Area quarterback Cooper Shumate also asked people watching the game to pray for the injured Raider.
“Everyone stop and pray for a Habersham Central player,” she wrote in a Facebook post. She described the collision as helmet-to-helmet and said seeing the coaches and players praying while Cook remained on the field was emotional.
Cook was eventually taken from the field by ambulance for further evaluation.
Habersham Central High School Athletic Director Geep Cunningham told Habersham News that Cook underwent a CT scan and that the results were clear. No additional information about his condition was immediately available.
Before the injury, Monroe Area had built on a 21-10 halftime advantage and pulled away during the second half. Habersham Central added seven points after halftime, but the Hurricanes scored 28 more to secure the 49-17 victory.
The loss dropped the Raiders to 1-2, while Monroe Area improved to 3-0.
Habersham News will continue monitoring Cook’s recovery and provide updates if additional information becomes available.
