The Piedmont University Lions baseball team begins Super Regional play today with a trip to the NCAA Division III World Series on the line.
After battling through one of the toughest schedules in the country, the Lions are now one series away from baseball’s biggest stage following a dominant postseason run that included conference tournament and regional championships.
Piedmont head coach Justin Scali said the team’s path to this point has been shaped by consistency, resilience and a willingness to challenge itself against elite competition throughout the season.
“We’ve had a great year, obviously,” Scali said. “We played a very competitive schedule. We’ve played 25 games against teams that have been in the national tournament last year.”
That demanding schedule appears to have prepared the Lions for postseason baseball.
Piedmont went undefeated in the conference tournament, finishing 4-0 before carrying that momentum into regional play, where the Lions once again swept through the competition with a 3-0 record.
According to Scali, the team’s ability to win in multiple ways has been one of its biggest strengths throughout the postseason.
“They’ve played very, very complimentary baseball,” he said. “We’ve won close, low-scoring games. We’ve won some high-scoring games. So just total team effort. Been very proud of how they’ve played.”
Now the Lions turn their attention to the Super Regionals, where the stakes increase dramatically. The series, which begins today, features a best two-out-of-three format between just two teams, with the winner advancing to the Division III World Series.
The Lions will carry not only momentum into the series, but also the support of the surrounding community.
“I’d like to thank the folks in the community,” Scali added. “We always have such strong crowds at home, and I know we get a lot of community members that come out and support our team, and we’re very grateful for their attendance and their support. We certainly feel it.”
As Piedmont prepares for one of the biggest series in program history, the Lions will look to continue a postseason run that has already proven they can compete with anyone in the country.
